We test the 2026 JAECOO 8 PHEV: The large Chinese SUV that doesn't need to apologize to anyone

The JAECOO 8 is big. There's no other way to say it. Its 4,785 mm length places it in the E-segment, directly competing with the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, or Volkswagen Touareg. But unlike these, the JAECOO 8 arrives with a design that doesn't try to go unnoticed.

The aesthetic is robust and angular, with an imposing front grille flanked by LED optics with a distinctive light signature, pronounced wheel arches, and 20-inch wheels as standard on the Top version. The result is an SUV that conveys solidity and off-road character without being over the top. The JAECOO 8's cabin impresses with its spaciousness. The 2,800 mm wheelbase guarantees second-row space that shames many European rivals: three average-sized adults travel comfortably, with generous knee room and sufficient headroom even for 1.90-meter passengers.

The dashboard is dominated by a 14.6-inch central screen with native resolution and precise touch response, flanked by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The operating system natively integrates Google Maps and supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto without issues.

The materials are adequate in frequently touched areas—good-textured synthetic leather on the steering wheel, armrests, and door panels—although some hard plastics appear in the lower areas of the cabin. This is the only visible concession to the price.

With a charged battery, the JAECOO 8 moves exclusively on its electric motors. Silence is absolute, and the response is instantaneous. City consumption of 15.2 kWh/100 km—measured in our tests in Madrid—translates to a real electric range of 68-74 km depending on driving style. This is slightly below the 80 km WLTP, but honest and very competitive compared to the Kia Sorento PHEV (~54 real km) or the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (~52 real km).

With a discharged battery, the hybrid system intelligently manages the 1.5T engine and electric motors. In a real mixed cycle, we recorded a consumption of 6.8 l/100 km, a very competitive figure for an SUV of this size. On the highway at 120 km/h, consumption dropped to 6.1 l/100 km.

With both electric motors and the internal combustion engine working at full capacity, the 265 combined HP move this 2,085 kg SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds—a figure verified in our GPS test. The electric AWD—with an independent rear electric motor, no mechanical axle—manages power precisely and without skidding. The sensation of thrust is genuinely impressive for a family vehicle.

🌿 Off-road

We took the JAECOO 8 to a forest track in the Sierra de Guadarrama. With Off-Road mode activated, the car moved with unexpected confidence and composure. Torque distribution between the axles—electronically managed by independent electric motors—did an excellent job on the most challenging sections.
